These boots include the original Supersoles, which are one of the strongest soles ever made, even stronger than most modern Vibram soles. The EPA eventually classified the blowing agent used in the manufacturing of the soles to be environmentally unfriendly, and so Red Wing had to replace it with an eco-friendly alternative. This lead to the creation of the Supersole 2.0, which is an adequate sole, but which can't compete to the durability of its predecessor, and modern Vibram soles.
